Mactan Island Memorial Garden is the first world-class memorial garden in the Philippines located across the Sacred Heart Parish Church at Barangay Marigondon, Lapu-lapu City, and Province of Cebu, Philippines with an area of 80,072 square meters.

The heavy industrialization of Metro Cebu, particularly the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-lapu, has created a population explosion beyond the service capacity of the existing memorial gardens or cemeteries.

The need for a memorial garden especially in the Island of Mactan has become very urgent. Today, the population in Cebu is estimated at 5 Million with 420 thousand for Mactan Island alone (Province of Cebu Census 2004).

A closer study revealed that in the cities of Cebu and Mandaue, cemeteries located in the urban centers are full.

In Mactan, there are only three (3) cemeteries in the island: The Roman Catholic Church Cemetery at Barangay Pajo; the City Cemetery at Barangay Gun-ob; and the Municipal Cemetery of Cordova. All are practically full.
